Feel So Close | Kat/Ethan
Her eyes slid open, as they would every morning, but there was something different this time as Katherine rolled over and found that she wasn’t alone. As soon as her eyes found Ethan’s sleeping face, she couldn’t help but smile to herself despite the many feelings and thoughts swirling around in her heart and her mind. She would not talk about them when they’d spent the night together, opting to focus on him, and suggested for them to order room service and watch a DVD she had brought with her. She knew that he could sense something was off, but Kat knew better than to bring it up. She had already put him in the horrible situation of having to keep something from his sister, she didn’t want to cause Ethan any added stress. All of that was temporarily forgotten once wine came into play and she allowed herself to lick her lips at the memory of their intimate moments.
Trying not to wake him, she would sit up and grab her notebook from the side table, leafing through the reminders and notes as she reviewed the plans half-made, and the plans yet to be made, a sad smile on her face.
Beauty in the Breakdown | Ethan & Kat
The swarm of emotions that had earlier lifted him completely out of his mind seemed to settle as Kat’s lips move, and the most beautiful sentences erupted form them. It was everything he’d hoped she’d say ever since they’d kissed; and Ethan found his ground very steadily after she’d said them. He felt calm, relaxed. Relieved. But most of all, there was a sense of deep security in him, rooted very far into his friendship with Kat, making him confidently trust her words. And meaning everything to Kat was a right big deal to him.
Ethan moved his hand across her cheek, fingers stroking the soft skin, whilst his other hand squeezed hers.
“Well, I’m glad to hear that,” he said with a playful air, tilting his head only slightly to look at her crookedly. His hand had come to rest by her temple, fingers gently burrowed into the blonde hair and thumb stroking her cheekbone. “Because I have reason to believe something like that has been happening to me as well.” He couldn’t help but grin a little wider, his face spilling sunshine-y happiness involuntarily as he did. “I’m so glad to hear you say this,” he added again on a calmer note, his grin fading into a smile.
In their close proximity, Ethan couldn’t help but to let his eyes travel down her face, and be taken by that same impulse he’d been trying to quench for a while now. Almost as if to humor himself — and actually to double-check — he inclined his head so that their noses were mere inches apart, and asked calmly, “Would it be alright if I kissed you?”, his smile all the while again growing into a kind of playful grin again.
A shy half-smile escaped from Katherine’s lips as Ethan confessed being on the same page as her, her right hand travelling to rub his muscular arm before settling both her hands on his shoulders. She had never expected this of all things would happen, and it never occurred to her that were was even the remotest possibility that this would ever happen. A certain sparkle in her eyes appeared as she let herself settle into the reality of the moment.
Then her eyes followed Ethan’s as he looked at her, vaguely recognizing the look he had in on his face. It had occurred on the beach, right before he had taken her by surprise with a kiss. And the question that followed didn’t surprise her one bit.
"It would be wrong to keep me hanging, wouldn’t it?" she replied, then she placed her lips gently on his, complying with his request for a kiss with a cute little nibble, before she pulled away again, and asked with a cute little flirtatious tone, "Was that what you had in mind?"
Desperately trying to live by this song right now.
“You mean everything to me, Ethan,” she finally spoke with a quiet assurance in her trembling voice when she felt him grab her hand, “I think…I think I’ve been falling in love with you ever since we’ve gotten on this island.”
Beauty in the Breakdown | Ethan & Kat
Ethan merely looked at her, met her eyes, as she held him off and spoke to him. He didn’t have an answer to her question. Because he didn’t know what to believe. This entire situation stressed him out more than anything had ever done in his entire life. More than anything in his career had ever done, more than anything in his childhood had ever done, and when you don’t talk about things, they tend to snowball inside your chest and come down on you. And to be perfectly frank, Ethan almost felt like it came down on him along with Kat’s shaking question that he could not answer.
And then tears toppled over in those beautiful eyes, and the woman before him - which he realized in just about that moment meant a lot, if not almost everything, to him - was crying, speaking words that made Ethan drop his jaw in the most minute of ways. Her words sneaked around his very being, squeezed him, made him unable to answer. Ethan worked it out in his mind pretty quickly, and all those small flirty jokes they’d shared over all the time in which they’d known each other flashed before his eyes - and, all of a sudden, made much more sense.
And when the spell was over - when Ethan could finally move again - he put his hand gently to her cheek, his thumb catching a few tears. “Kat,” he prompted again, her name the only thing that seemed to fit on his lips in that moment. He locked hi gaze to hers, and stared at her for a moment, unable to decide just how to formulate himself. “I…,” he started, and licked his lips with a kind of determination. “I’m here. I’m going to be here. I’m not going to leave. I never knew… if I’d known… Kat, you…”
It seemed like for the first time in Ethan’s life, he didn’t exactly know what to say. No; literally, the first time. He’d never stumbled upon all that which he’d yearned to say, ever. Not with Sarah. Not with anyone. But here stood a woman, to whom Ethan suddenly realized he associated the word love, tears falling down her face, telling him, that through all that time they had been friends, there had been a point at which she had wanted an honest chance. And Ethan would have given it to her, had he known.
Ethan’s other hand sought her other cheek gently. “I want an honest chance. I’ve wanted one since… since we became friends. I thought, after all those times we’d just joked around, that you only wanted to be my friend. So I backed off. And now we’re here, on this island, and we had one moment, just the two of us. All those feelings from our friendship that I’d choked down resurfaced, and I took a wild chance, and I kissed you. And I meant that kiss. Everything that it implied; I meant it. I still mean it. Kat… you don’t know how much you mean to me. How much you’ve meant to me for a while now. Hell, I didn’t even really know myself, until… we kissed.”
Ethan found himself looking at Kat with a reserved expression on his face, though his eyes seemed ablaze. “My sister wasn’t… entirely wrong, I suppose.” He lifted a hand off of her cheek, and placed it on his neck. Truth be told, he couldn’t put into words why it was that he wasn’t the relationship type. Because in a sense; he was. He just… didn’t think that one bad experience — being torn away from Sarah — would have to limit him. And many women seemed enthusiastic enough. He’d even dated them properly. “But none of the women in my past has meant just as much as you do. Wonderful people though they’ve been.” Ethan had to smile a little, his hand leaving his neck and searching for her hand to grasp.
Katherine felt the one corner of her lip lift in response to Ethan bringing his hand up to her face and the sound of her name brought her back to focus with the man standing in front of her. The intensity of his stare gave away a moment of incertitude and hesitation as if he wasn’t sure how to react before she saw him lick his lips and she sensed his determination come back to him. Listening intently to what he had to say, she could feel her body relax a little, the reassurance of his words being soaked through her entire being.
And when the rest of his words came and his other hand came up on her face, Kat let out a breath she didn’t realized she’d been holding since she finished with her confession. Her eyes went from scared, to intense to relieved as he continued on speaking and she was shocked to say the least in finding out that her feelings had been reciprocated all these weeks. She had decided weeks earlier that she wanted the honest chance, after the anniversary of Drew’s death, having realized she didn’t want to be alone anymore. But having actually confessed her feelings, she felt the weight of the world was finally lifted off her shoulders and hearing him reciprocate her feelings caused her to sigh in relief.
"You mean everything to me, Ethan," she finally spoke with a quiet assurance in her trembling voice when she felt him grab her hand, "I think…I think I’ve been falling in love with you ever since we’ve gotten on this island."
Beauty in the Breakdown | Ethan & Kat
Ethan narrowed his eyes as he let her words sink in — the touch of their hands, their eyes locked together, the shiny glimmer of tears in Kat’s eyes — and thus slowly moved his free hand to cup her cheek gently.
“Kat,” he said simply, hesitating just by her name, not letting go of her gaze. Ethan opened his mouth to speak again, yet paused - once more - when she spoke again.
With each word, Ethan felt that same wave of feelings rise within him, pulling itself upward slowly. In their close proximity, Ethan found the earnest in his own words to pull on him, and that sensation of losing control again swept over him. Ethan inclined his head a little, pointedly locking eyes with Kat as he felt her hand upon his face. He’d just began to open his mouth to speak, when Kat’s arms were wrapped around him, her smaller body suddenly so closely etched to his, and a blonde sea of hair the only thing he could look down on. It took him not a moment at all to react, and his arms were around her in a gentle response. It took him a moment, however, to open his mouth and respond.
“You’re not,” he said shortly. His lips came down to rest on her head, and the scent of shampoo filled his nostrils. “You’re not going to lose me. I promise. Not now. Not ever.” Ethan closed his eyes, the scent of Kat the only thing to keep him grounded. “Do you hear me?” he added very gently, and calmly - yet still, somehow, pointedly.
And it dawned on her in that moment that his playboy reputation had just been an excuse for her to avoid getting close to him. Katherine had never fully recovered from the accident that had taken her first love away and now that the murders were happening on the island, she had yet another reason to be afraid of getting close to Ethan. She had been afraid all this time of opening up to him on an intimate level because she was afraid she might lose another other love in her life. But with death just around the corner and them stuck on the island until the mystery was resolved, she couldn’t help but feel that they were living on borrowed time.
As she felt his lips resting on her head and his words traveled to her ears, Kat couldn’t help but think about all the little moments that flashed back in her memory, the intimate moments that didn’t seem to fit his reputation. As she heard the determination in his voice, something told her that he meant it. As the doubts crept into her voice, she pulled away slightly and held him at arms length. “Yeah, but how do you know that whoever’s responsible for all this isn’t going to come after you?”
As she spoke her voice grew increasingly shaky and the tears slid down her cheek before she could stop them. “You know, I never thought I would here with you of all people right now. I just…Emily warned me you were not the relationship type and everything. And I’ve seen the rotating door of women you’ve dated. I always wished that you would give me a chance, a real honest chance. But I figured, it would never get past friendship and flirting so I never said anything. But then…you just…you helped me feel okay again just by being there. I just… I don’t want you to not be there.”
Trying to be business as usual here…
So, you’re still expecting the wedding to take place, then? Despite it all?
I don’t really know, Carrie, to be honest with you…
*can sense something’s a little off* Are you sure you’re OK?
Trying to be business as usual here…
I’m just being realistic.
So, you’re still doing stuff for the wedding? [shakes his head]
Just trying to keep my mind occupied. Even if a bachelorette party seems like a stupid thing to plan right now.
And that was the florist from the mainland, so I had to explain that there was no ferry service to the Island.
